This dagger was first seen in the hands of the assassin sent to kill Bran Stark. kill. First associated with Petyr Baelish, then with Tyrion Lannister, Catelyn Stark used the dagger as evidence to frame and arrest Tyrion for attempting to murder her son. This started the Stark-Lannister War. It was later glimpsed in a Targaryen history text that Samwell Tarly read at the Citadel.

The knife remained in Petyr Baelish's possession for some time. Then, after traveling with the Knights of the Vale to Winterfell, he gave it to Bran Stark as a gesture of goodwill, since the knife had come so close to ending his life. Bran had no need for a weapon, so he passed it on to his sister Arya.

Arya adopted the knife-fighting style into her normal fighting style and eventually used the knife to attack the Night King. When she plunged the Valyrian steel blade into the Night King's torso, the sword's power shattered the Night King, and with his death, so did all the other white warriors and their host of combatants through the magic that had bound them to their creator. This ended the war against the dead.
