This is the proper scabbard for oathkeeper, one of two one-handed valyrian steel swords reforged by order of lord tywin lannister from the melted sword ice, the ancestral sword of house stark. tywin gives it to his son jaime, believing that he is willing to give up his position as lord commander of the kingsguard to succeed his father as lord of casterlystone. although jaime rejects it and thus disclaims his right to the inheritance, he is allowed to keep the sword. later that season he gifts it to brienne of tarth, with whom he has a special connection. it is brienne who eventually names the sword oathkeeper .
