Victor velvet doublet, late medieval vest with metal buttons, black
A doublet is a close-fitting jacket or waistcoat for men. The origin of this garment is found in the Franconian doublet, which was used as an undergarment from the 14th century onwards.
From the 15th century onwards, the doublet appeared as an outer garment in Spanish fashion and from then on became widespread in Europe. Typical of this type of garment was a close-fitting fit, a small high collar and a seam at the waist. It was usually luxuriously decorated and made of high-quality materials.
The doublet reached down to the waist or hip and sometimes had an attached lap. provided. The attached lap covered the transition to the trousers, which were attached directly to the doublet with nestel straps. Sometimes the sleeves were also attached only to the shoulders with nestels and could therefore be removed or replaced. Not all doublets had sleeves and this is why the doublet (also called jerkin in English) was the predecessor of our present-day waistcoat. The centre front was usually closed with numerous buttons (a laced centre front was more common on its predecessor, the doublet). It was often enhanced and filled out in the stomach or chest area, as was the fashion of the time.
The doublet was combined with a white shirt and melon-coloured trousers. Numerous Spanish portraits from the late Middle Ages provide evidence of the doublet, and some originals from this period are still preserved.
Our lined velvet doublet (100% cotton) does not reach to the hips. The applied ribbons, high-quality ball buttons and shoulder flaps make it clear that it is designed for festive occasions. The attached cuff has a slit and concealed embroidered eyelets at the front. The eyelets allow the trousers to be fastened directly.
The elegant doublet is ideal for representing well-off families and enhances any costume.
Regarding velvet, it can be added that it originated in the Mediterranean region in the 14th century and was predominantly woven in Italy. The elaborate design made velvet robes an exclusive item.

We recommend removing light stains with the clothes brush in the direction of the pile. If there is heavy contamination, we recommend dry cleaning the vest.
How to find the right size:
- To determine your dress size based on your body measurements, measure horizontally at the strongest point.
