About the author:
John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born on January 3, 1892, in Bloemfontein, South Africa, but grew up in England. From 1925, he was a professor of English philology at Oxford and soon acquired a reputation as one of the most respected philologists far beyond England. His particular preference was the Old Norse languages. His world-famous books, The Hobbit , The Lord of the Rings , and The Silmarillion, have had a decisive influence on fantasy literature and have been published in translation for over 40 years. Since then, millions of readers have been left in suspense by the events of Middle-earth. J.R.R. Tolkien died in Bournemouth in 1973.
