Hosokawa Katsumoto (1430 – 1473) was an important shogun governor in the 15th century and a key figure in Japan’s Onin Wars. With over 80,000 men, he fought against his father-in-law Yamana Sôzen in the then capital, Kyoto. After 10 years of war, Kyoto was destroyed and neither side could claim victory.

Hand forged in the Hon-Sanmei style, one of the most complex forging processes ever undertaken, the blade has 3 zones of different hardness. The cutting edge is made of hardened 1095 carbon steel, the sides are made of medium-hard 1065 carbon steel and the core is made of softer steel with a low carbon content. A traditional, differentiated hardening with the help of a layer of clay further refines the blade and creates an exceptionally beautiful hamon line.
