- The sword blade is hand-forged from carbon steel and traditionally hardened with a fine hamon line.

- The sharp blade has a bo-hi (channel) to reduce weight.

- The handle (tsuka) is made of wood, covered with real fish skin (seed).

- The handle wrap (tsuka-ito) is traditionally made of black cotton.

- Two menukis are inserted into the handle.

- The sword's tang is extra long and is attached to the handle with two bamboo pegs (mekugi).

Saigo Takamori: The last samurai known from the film The Last Samurai . A long tradition ended in 1877 with Saigo Takamori, the last samurai. He refused to accept the new political situation, the abolition of the samurai, and launched a final uprising against the new government. However, his samurai fighters stood no chance against the military, which was already equipped with modern firearms.
