Imperial Galo acquires -A- Nijmegen, Steel
Imperial Gallic (Nijmegen)
Type according to H.R. Robinson: Imperial Gallic to Continental classification: Weisenau-Nijmegen type
The first Weisenau-type helmet, a line that developed over more than two centuries to become the Niedermörmter and which shapes the current image of the Roman legionary.
The helmet already has simple but distinct 'brows'. These were typical of the "Gallic" models of the Imperial period and offered greater stability. Ear cutouts are also available, but without the ear protectors that were introduced later. The headband is particularly massive and heavy. When you look at images of the original, you wonder if the helmet constantly slips on the wearer's forehead.
This detailed reconstruction of the find from Nijmegen (Netherlands) now demonstrates that the helmet is overall very balanced and comfortable to wear despite the solid metal support.
Quote: Mainly from the end of the 1st century BC until the first half of the 1st century AD. The original was found together with pottery from the time of Emperor Augustus. It coincides with the Battle of Varus in the Teutoburg Forest (9th AD).
