History of Italy in the Middle Ages
By elke goez
From the fall of the Roman Empire to the Sacco di Roma, Elke Goez draws the medieval history of Italy clearly and distinctly. Being under the domination of a great variety of foreign peoples, the well-known small-scale structure quickly developed, which determined the map of Italy until modern times.
Elke Goez presents Italy’s political development, full of tensions and fractures, in a precise and comprehensible way. She always deals with Italy’s social and economic history as well as its cultural achievements: from Italy’s early heyday, to the city republics that achieved unprecedented wealth and political influence in the Middle Ages, to the development of Italian trade and banking, and last but not least, to art, which developed its own language with Cimague and Giotto and which, at the end of the 14th century, led to the Italian Renaissance, unique in the world as an artistic expression.
