History of Italy in the Middle Ages
By Elke Goez
From the fall of the Roman Empire to the Sacco di Roma, Elke Goez paints a clear and vivid picture of medieval Italy. Under the domination of a wide variety of foreign peoples, the familiar small-scale structure quickly developed, determining the map of Italy until modern times.
Elke Goez presents in a precise and understandable way the political development of Italy, full of tensions and fractures. It is always a question of the social and economic history, as well as the cultural achievements of Italy: from the first heyday of Italy... of the city republics that achieved unprecedented wealth and political influence in the Middle Ages... on the development of Italian trade and banking... and last but not least, art, which developed a language of its own with Cimabue and Giotto and which, at the end of the 14th century, led to the Italian Renaissance, unique in the world as an artistic expression.
