Hedningarna - Karelia visa

After searching for the soul of Polska in Hippjock (1997), Hedningarna, this time again as a quintet, travelled to remote and isolated areas of Russian Karelia. Karelia is the general name for the area on both sides of the common border between Finland and Russia. Over the years we have come across runic chants on old shellac records and in books, and with this knowledge we have freely interpreted them in our own way. Now we wanted to look behind this, to the core and roots of this tradition. Thanks to the newly opened borders, warm hospitality and great help from organisations and individuals, we were able to meet the last of the peoples who have preserved this ancient art over the centuries. We returned full of strong images and feelings about life in general and about Karelia in particular.

The impressions and inspirations of this journey have left deep traces in the new production Karelia Visa. It has become a more earthy and realistic production than its predecessors. The beautiful melodies reflect an inescapable melancholy, but not only: there is also joy and dancing and, of course, the heavy rhythm so typical of Hedningarna. Not to be forgotten: the girls are back at the microphone and with them – the best Hedningarna ever.
