Hedningarna - Karelia visa
After searching for the soul of Polska in Hippjock (1997), Hedningarna, this time again as a quintet, traveled to remote and isolated areas of Russian Karelia. Karelia is the general name for the area on both sides of the common border between Finland and Russia. Over the years, we have come across runic chants on old shellac records and in books, and with this knowledge, we have freely interpreted them in our own way. Now we wanted to look behind this, at the core and roots of this tradition. Thanks to the recently opened borders, the warm hospitality, and the great help of organizations and individuals, we were able to meet the last of the people who have preserved this ancient art over the centuries. We returned filled with strong images and feelings about life in general and Karelia in particular.
The impressions and inspirations of this trip have left a deep mark on the new production, Karelia Visa. It has become a more earthy and realistic production than its predecessors. The beautiful melodies reflect an inescapable melancholy, but not only that: there's also joy and dancing, and, of course, the heavy rhythm so typical of Hedningarna. Not to be forgotten: the girls are back on the microphone, and with them: the best Hedningarna ever.

We hope that this Finnish minority will survive its difficult situation and that the traditions will be passed on to future generations.
