Cold Steel® high-quality tomahawks are precision-crafted from forged 1055 carbon steel. When producing impact tools, especially those with a cutting edge, drop forging offers many distinct advantages. Using multiple dies (hollow molds/dies) connected to massive forging hammers, the steel is formed step by step into a completely homogeneous mass and impact-pressed to achieve uniform grain flow and minimize defect formation. All Cold Steel® tomahawks are also differentially hardened: the cutting edge and striking surface of the hammer are fully hardened for sharpness, while the rest of the head remains softer to absorb shock and impact.

The influence of the famous Viking weapons far outlasted the Vikings' actual rule. In particular, their axes served as models for many designs still in use today. Typically, the lower point was used to grasp an opponent's shield, leg, arm, shoulder, or neck to temporarily immobilize them or bring them closer. The upper point was designed more for hacking or with a direct thrusting motion for piercing. The Norse Hawk is one of the most popular models in the Cold Steel® tomahawk collection.
