Mammen Viking axe with decorative engravings

The Mammen axe was recovered from a 10th-century burial mound in Mammen, Jutland, Denmark, and is considered one of the most remarkable and beautiful archaeological finds from the Viking Age. The Viking Age artistic style of the same name owes its name to this unique piece.

The grave from which the Viking axe comes dates to around 970/971 AD and was probably the final resting place of a man of high, even princely, status. The small iron axe was richly decorated with carvings inlaid with precious metals, suggesting that it may have been a ritual or ceremonial weapon rather than a simple battle or throwing axe.

The original piece, as well as many other additions and textile remains from the so-called mammen find or mammenfund (Danish: mammenfundet ) are on display at the Danish National Museum ( nationalmuseet ) in Copenhagen.

In the case of the Viking axe offered here, some of the engraved motifs that adorn the original artifact have been reproduced. The carbon steel axe head has a blunt edge approximately 10 cm long and is mounted on a wooden handle approximately 63 cm long.

This early medieval axe is designed as a collector's item or decorative object and is also ideal as an accessory, for example to complete your Viking costume.

Details:

- Material: blunt carbon steel blade (not stainless!), ash wood handle
- Total length (shaft): approx. 63cm

- Axe head: approx. 16 x 10 cm

- Blade thickness: approx. 1.8 cm at the base / approx. 0.3 cm at the front of the cutting edge

- Shaft thickness: approx. 3.5 x 2.5 cm

- Weight: approx. 760 g

- Delivered without a cover

The above specifications may vary slightly from copy to copy.

The steel used here is not stainless and may show slight signs of corrosion. We recommend regular maintenance of the blade, for example with Ballistol, a universal oil ideal for preserving steel products.
