A helmet support is a chain mail that was used in the Middle Ages to attach a helmet as additional protection for the neck and shoulders. The preferred helmet types here were the nasal helmet, but especially the late medieval close-fitting helmet and its variant, the gugel dog.

The FRM braid is a European flat-ring chain braid, which was manufactured and used with various modifications and with different ring diameters from ancient times to the late Middle Ages. It consists exclusively of flat chain rings. The rings and perforated rings are alternately joined together in the 4-in-1 braiding style. This weave was and is less labor-intensive than the fully riveted braid, as only every second ring is riveted.
