The gugel is made of durable canvas and is very comfortable to wear. The hood is wide and closes at the front with a ribbon. This gugel dates back to the early Middle Ages.



The characteristic feature of the gugel in general is its hood, which also covers the shoulders. The hood was first worn by the Vikings. In the High Middle Ages it was part of the everyday clothing of farmers, craftsmen and travellers. From the 14th century onwards, the fit became tighter and the hood became richly decorated. From the 16th century onwards it was rarely worn.
