Manica: the gladiator arm guard made of leather
Manicae were part of the standard equipment of Roman gladiators. These armoured sleeves made of tough leather are documented in countless contemporary illustrations, such as the second image, which shows a mosaic in Zliten (Libya) from the 2nd century AD.
The protection covered the entire arm, from the shoulder to the hand. This is where the Latin name manica comes from, meaning "long sleeve".
Our reconstruction is very robust and therefore ideal for representing a Galdiator.
