The wakizashi, the weapon of honorable people in feudal Japan, could also be used by socially respected citizens, while the katana was reserved for samurai. The short sword was carried in the obi and was more advantageous for fighting in close quarters than the long sword. The short sword was also used for ritual suicide or for cutting off the head of a slain enemy. Katana and wakizashi formed a pair of swords, which is called a daisho.
