Historically, the katana was one of the traditional Japanese swords used by the samurai of feudal Japan.
The first use of the word katana to refer to a long sword, different from a tachi, dates back to the Kamakura period (1185-1333).
The katana was often paired with a similar smaller sword, such as a wakizashi, or it could also be carried with the tanto, a smaller, similarly shaped dagger. Pairing a katana with a smaller sword is called a daisho. Only samurai were allowed to carry the daisho: it represented the samurai's social power and personal honour.
The katana is characterized by its distinctive appearance: a curved, slender, single-edged blade with a circular guard and a long, two-handed handle. It has historically been associated with the samurai of feudal Japan.
