Historically, the katana was one of the traditional Japanese swords used by the samurai of feudal Japan.
The first use of the word katana to refer to a long sword, other than a tachi, dates back to the Kamakura period (1185–1333).
The katana was often paired with a smaller, similar sword, such as a wakizashi, or it could also be carried with the tanto, a smaller, similarly shaped dagger. Combining a katana with a smaller sword is called a daisho. Only samurai were allowed to carry a daisho: it represented the samurai's social power and personal honor.
The katana is characterized by its distinctive appearance: a curved, thin, single-edged blade with a circular guard and a long, two-handed handle. It has historically been associated with the samurai of feudal Japan.
