Discover Large Early Medieval Wing Spearhead, Approx.
Large early medieval wing spearhead, approx. 61 cm
The so-called winged spear, which was primarily used as a thrusting weapon and is often associated with the Norse, is actually of Franco-Carolingian origin. It was adopted by the Vikings and used as a war and hunting spear well into the High Middle Ages.
On the battlefield, projections on either side of the beak were intended to prevent the tip from penetrating too deeply when thrusting (which would have made extracting the spear more difficult), and provided an effective way to parry enemy attacks in close combat. In hunting (as in the case of the saufeder , a spear specially designed for hunting boar and large game), these projecting wings were not only intended to counteract too-deep penetration of prey, but also offered additional control and better protection from an angry, wounded animal.
The impressive medieval spearhead we offer here is made from heat-treated EN45 carbon steel. It measures approximately 61 cm in length and has blades that are approximately 45.5 cm long. The wings are approximately 4 mm thick. With such a massive blade, which tapered sharply from a broad base to a long, narrow tip, the spearman would have been able to not only inflict deep, wide wounds, but also deliver sharp, slashing blows. Two holes allow it to be mounted on a wooden handle of your choice to create your own wing spear. Delivery is without shaft and without fixing material.
Alternatively, collectors can also purchase our wooden spearhead stand (sold separately, item number 1816375000) to stylishly display their treasures in their armory.
Please note that this spearhead was primarily designed as a collector's item, decorative item or accessory and is not suitable for display combat! The tip of the blade is not rounded and the edges are not sharpened but ground (with proper equipment and practical experience they can be sharpened if necessary).
