Discover Large Early Medieval Wing Spearhead, Approx.

Large early medieval winged spearhead, approx. 61 cm

The so-called winged lance, which was primarily used as a thrusting weapon and is often associated with the Norse, is actually of Franco-Carolingian origin. It was adopted by the Vikings and used as a war and hunting spear well into the High Middle Ages.

On the battlefield, the projections on either side of the beak were intended to prevent the point from penetrating too deeply when thrusting (which would have made the spear difficult to extract), and provided an effective way of parrying enemy attacks in close combat. In hunting (as in the case of the saufeder , a spear specially designed for hunting wild boar and big game), these projecting wings were not only intended to counteract too deep penetration of the prey, but also offered additional control and better protection from a wounded and angry animal.

The impressive medieval spearhead we offer here is made of heat-treated EN45 carbon steel. It measures approximately 61 cm long and has blades approximately 45.5 cm long. The wings are approximately 4 mm thick. With such a massive blade, tapering sharply from a wide base to a long, narrow point, the spearman would have been able not only to inflict deep, wide wounds but also to deliver slashing, cutting blows. Two holes allow it to be mounted on a wooden handle of your choice to create your own wing spear. Delivery is without a shaft and without mounting hardware.

Alternatively, collectors can also purchase our wooden spearhead stand (sold separately, item number 1816375000) to stylishly display their treasures in their armory.

Please note that this spearhead was designed primarily as a collector's item, decorative object, or accessory and is not suitable for exhibition combat! The blade tip is not rounded, and the edges are not sharpened, but ground (with proper equipment and practical experience, they can be sharpened if necessary).

Details:

- Material: EN45 spring steel, tempered (carbon steel, not stainless).
- Total length (including nozzle): approx. 61 cm

- Blade length: approx. 49 cm (cut approx. 45.5 cm)

- Maximum blade width: approx. 10.5 cm

- Width at wings: approx. 12 cm

- Blade thickness: approx. 4 mm

- Axle support length (eyelet): approx. 12 cm

- Inner diameter of axle support: approx. 2.7 cm

The above specifications may vary slightly from specimen to specimen.

The steel used here is not stainless and may show slight signs of corrosion. We recommend regularly treating the spearhead, for example with Ballistol, a universal oil ideal for preserving steel products.
