Give away Medieval Cap, Combat Helmet, 2mm Steel

Brain hood, medieval helmet, 2mm steel

– Suitable for show combat –

The brain cap, also known as the iron hood, appeared in the early middle ages (late 12th/early 13th century) and was used throughout the late middle ages and well into the renaissance. This medieval helmet, which was essentially a simple, close-fitting skullcap made of iron or steel, could be worn alone but was usually combined with a chainmail hood or a chainmail helmet. Towards the end of the 13th century it was common practice to wear a hood under the upper helmet on the battlefield or during tournaments. Since the latter was often removed in hand-to-hand combat because it impeded vision and breathing, the brain cap still offered some protection for the head with the best possible field of vision.

Although the cerebral hood eventually evolved into the so-called pelvic hood , it never completely disappeared and remained in use throughout the Middle Ages. In the early modern period, the later variant of this type of helmet was mainly worn by nobles and men-at-arms, who concealed it under a fashionable feathered beret or a wide-brimmed leather or felt hat, thus combining style and protection. However, due to the large number of surviving iron hoods from this period, experts tend to assume that they were occasionally issued to simple infantrymen.

This reconstruction of a peakless brain cap from the early Middle Ages, as worn in the 13th century, is made from 2mm steel. The interior of this combat helmet is blackened for better protection against corrosion and has an adjustable, riveted leather inlay. The sturdy, adjustable leather chin strap is fitted with an antiqued brass buckle.

This wearable helmet is suitable for combat, reenactment, LARP, stage or TV/film. It is best suited to High Middle Ages and Late Middle Ages settings and is ideal for completing a European warrior's armour. Of course, the medieval helmet is also an excellent addition to every helmet collector's treasure trove.
