Saint Birgita's Cap: Modest and Practical Linen and Cotton Blend Medieval Hat for Reenactments and LARP

Complete your medieval outfit with this hat.

Head coverings were an essential part of women's wardrobe throughout medieval Europe, symbolizing modesty, social status, and religious devotion. They also served a practical purpose, helping to keep hair clean.

Saint Birgitta's cap was a practical and essential element of medieval women's clothing. Worn close to the skin, it served as a base layer for veils, caps, or other head coverings, while also helping to keep them in place. The cap also kept hair neat and tidy, offering practical benefits and a modest appearance.

St. Birgitta's cap is believed to reflect the headdress styles of the 14th to early 15th centuries, commonly worn by women of various social classes. It ties at the nape of the neck for a secure and adjustable fit. Whether worn alone or layered under more elaborate headdresses, this cap is essential for historical authenticity.

Linen was the most common fabric for caps, prized for its breathability, comfort, and ability to withstand frequent washing. Natural or bleached linen was a popular choice for everyday wear, while finer caps might include decorative stitching or delicate embellishments for wealthier individuals.

This reproduction is a simple design, making it appropriate for a wide range of classes and people. It consists of a simple two-piece cap sewn to a band that forms the brim and ties. The cap is gathered close to the back. The seam at the back edge of the cap is sewn, and the seam allowance is flat. It is made of a natural-colored cotton and linen blend (87% cotton, 13% linen).

Measures:

Edge: 62 cm

Ties: 78 cm
