Light and efficient : this was what the gladius was called in the Roman army. It was the most important weapon because it could be used efficiently in any close-quarters combat situation. Pompeii was one of the later versions. For a more detailed look, see Russell Robinson's book , "What the Soldiers Wore on Hadrian's Wall ." In this Pompeii version, the curvature was removed and the upper part was reduced in size. However, it was just as effective and easy to make. This replica is made of high-carbon steel and has a turned ash and maple handle.

Includes matching wooden case with leather sheath and brass appliqués.
