Julius Caesar, Gaius Julius Caesar (101 BC–44 BC) was the greatest soldier and political leader of ancient Rome. During his lifetime, the empire's borders were advanced and secured. Rome transformed from a republic to a single-sovereign government, and Caesar was its first dictator. He wrote some of the greatest history works in Latin, describing the campaigns he led in Gaul and the civil wars. He was an architect, mathematician, and one of the most renowned orators of antiquity. There is no doubt that Caesar was ambitious and that he relished the great power placed in his hands. He is said to have wanted to be crowned king. This was the reason given by the conspirators led by Cassius and Brutus for his assassination. Caesar became too powerful and posed a threat to the survival of the Republic.
