A gambeson, also called a gambeson jacket or aketon, is almost indispensable for free combat and exhibition combat. The gambeson was worn under chain and plate armor in the late Middle Ages. It increased the comfort of wearing the knight's armor and was also able to absorb enemy blows, thus reducing the risk of injury.

This used-look gambeson from Ulfberth is made from three layers of fabric: an outer layer of cotton fabric (canvas), a quilted polyester layer, and a cotton inner lining. The vertical and diagonal quilting secures the padding and increases comfort. Hand-stitched rings in the chest area give the gambeson an armored look. A patch, numerous hand-stitched details, and a special wash give this gambeson a vintage feel. The leather details and contrasting lining create a beautiful contrast. The sides and neckline are fitted with vents for added comfort.
