A gambeson is almost indispensable for wrestling and exhibition fighting. The gambeson, also called gambison, armoured jacket or aketon, was worn under chain or plate armour in the Middle Ages. It made the knight's armour more comfortable to wear and could also absorb enemy blows, thus reducing the risk of injury.



This gambeson from Ulfberth is made up of three layers of fabric: an outer layer of cotton fabric (canvas), a padded polyester layer and a cotton inner lining. The padding on the upper body is diamond-shaped. The padding is horizontal at the waist and vertical at the hips and arms. The gambeson is fastened with leather straps and metal buckles in the centre front. Stitched leather details reinforce particularly exposed areas. The sleeves are secured with nestlé straps and can be removed as desired. The high collar greatly increases the comfort of wearing armour or chainmail on the neck.
