A gambeson is almost indispensable for wrestling and exhibition fighting. The gambeson, also called a gambison, armored jacket, or aketon, was worn under chain or plate armor in the Middle Ages. It made the knight's armor more comfortable to wear and could also absorb enemy blows, thus reducing the risk of injury.

This Ulfberth gambeson is composed of three layers of fabric: an outer layer of cotton fabric (canvas), a padded polyester layer, and a cotton inner lining. The upper body padding is diamond-shaped. The padding is horizontal at the waist and vertical at the hips and arms. The gambeson fastens with leather straps and metal buckles at the center front. Stitched leather details reinforce particularly exposed areas. The sleeves are secured with Nestlé straps and can be removed as desired. The high collar greatly increases the comfort of wearing pieces of armor or chain mail around the neck.
