Viking Scarf, Herringbone Ribbon, 7 m Long, in Various Colours FARBE senfgelb/rot

Gift Viking Scarf, Herringbone Ribbon, 7 m Long, In Various Colors

7m Herringbone Tape Calf Wrap Assorted Colors

This 7m long cotton ribbon in herringbone weave was woven on an extra narrow loom and therefore has a particularly beautiful selvedge design. It is 10cm wide and can be used as a calf wrap, belt or decorative border. The 7m of ribbon is enough for a pair of calf wraps.

Bibs with woven motifs were very popular throughout the Middle Ages and even before. They were status symbols and were sometimes very elaborately made. The edges, usually made using a board weaving method, adorned the outer garment at the hems and necklines. Calf wraps (leg wraps, cross leggings) were also made on narrow looms. They were an integral part of Germanic clothing and were worn on the foot. They were wrapped over the trousers to below the knee and served as a substitute for socks. They not only kept you warm, but also protected your legs from injury. Both men and women wore calf wraps.

The characteristic of herringbone (also called fishbone ) is the small pattern, reminiscent of ears or fish bones. This union is particularly noticeable when two different colors are used in the warp and weft. The weave makes the fabric elastic, which makes calves with herringbone weave especially easy to put on.

This type of binding was often used, for example in haithabu and birka.
