Delight in the Roman Lantern Made of Brass and Rawhide (Parchment)
Roman lantern made of brass and rawhide (parchment)
This Roman lantern is based on historical originals from the 1st to 3rd centuries AD, some of which were found in Pompeii, parts of England, and what is now Libya. This latter type of lamp primarily used olive oil as a fuel source. Although these lamps were predominantly made in Italy, this style was copied in some places by craftsmen in Britain and other parts of the world.
The lamp's cylindrical frame, which rests on three legs, is made of brass. It consists of a solid bottom plate connected to two vertical support struts. These, in turn, are riveted to the top ring. A domed lid with decorative ventilation openings is attached to the struts by chains and rests securely on the top ring thanks to two notches in the lid's edge. To carry or hang the lantern, a brass handle/loop is attached to the lid with a third chain. The body is covered in genuine leather (parchment). It also has small ventilation holes that allow light to pass through and create a unique, soft, and pleasantly warm glow.
Inside, the fully removable oil container attaches to the lantern base with a simple key. The container consists of three parts: a reservoir, a wick holder, and a lid with ventilation holes. This finely crafted oil lantern also offers other lighting options: since both the wick holder and the lid can be completely removed as desired, a tea light or larger candle can be used as an alternative light source.
The lantern can be hung, easily carried outdoors, or placed on a table or flat surface, making it extremely versatile. At night, the lantern creates a beautiful atmosphere both indoors and outdoors.
This beautiful, decorative, and functional brass lamp is an ideal accessory for Roman reenactments (whether at living history events or at the Roman camp) and LARP. It will provide that extra touch of authenticity and ambiance to any setting. Of course, it's also a wonderful decorative object for the home or garden.
