Large Roman tinned brass phalera, Medusa gorgone
A phalera is the Roman equivalent of a military medal or trophy. In ancient Rome, these decorated disc-shaped plaques, which were usually made of gold, silver, or bronze, were awarded to Roman soldiers who had distinguished themselves in battle. During parades, a highly decorated Roman legionary (called a phaleratus ) would display his phalerae on a leather cuirass that he wore over his armor. Distinguished veterans who had accumulated enough medals for a full harness were held in high esteem.
This large and heavy replica of a Roman phalera is cast in brass and tinned. It bears the image of Medusa, one of the three monstrous Gorgons of Greek mythology.
Due to its size and weight, this Gorgon-headed brass phalera fits best as a centrepiece in a phalerae strap structure. It is ideal for equipping your own chest harness and also as a replacement, for example for our article number 1016676500. It is delivered without mounting material.
An ideal accessory for Roman reenactment.
