Iberian falcata, silver, marto

The falcata is a steel sword originating from the Iberian Peninsula and is therefore related to the native Iberians before the Roman conquest. It was used by the Iberian countries or neighbouring countries such as the Celtiberians, as it was the most common sword in the peninsular area. Roman chroniclers praised the quality of the iron used in the construction of Spanish weapons; they were surprised by their cutting capacity and flexibility, one of the most valued and sought-after characteristics in their manufacture. Curiously, after the first battles in the Iberian Peninsula, Roman troops were ordered to reinforce the edges of their shields with iron, perhaps due to the cutting power of falcatas, much higher than that of straight swords and sabres.
