Delight yourself with Facón, the Argentine Gaucho Knife
Facón, Argentine gaucho knife
The facón, Argentina's national knife, gained worldwide fame thanks to the gauchos. Its wide, simple blade was absolutely ideal for a wide variety of tasks, whether killing or butchering game and livestock, repairing saddles and bridles, or cooking and eating.
Its roots date back to the 14th century, where it was widely used among virtually all classes of the population, from the lower peasant class to the landed nobility. This knife, whose blade resembles an oversized chef's knife, was so popular that it crossed the Atlantic with the first European settlers and gradually spread throughout North and South America.
Now, Cold Steel® is very pleased to introduce our own version of this iconic knife. The wide, durable 1090 carbon steel blade, which has been kept in its classic shape, measures 30.5 cm long. Elaborate hand-notched (called jimping) blades are made on the back of the blade. The exotic Malaysian hardwood handle is traditionally hand-carved. The bolster and pommel are made of nickel-plated steel. Even the vagina of the Cold Steel® Large Facón knife follows the Argentine tradition. It is made of durable black leather, has a center seam, and is decorated with an artistic nickel-plated steel plaque.
1090 carbon steel
1090 carbon steel is an excellent choice for larger fixed blades. It sharpens easily and holds that edge, yet is still tough enough to withstand the most brutal stress tests. In short: a good all-purpose carbon steel that remains very durable even with heavy use.
