Gift Italian Rapier with Curved Guard, 16th Century.
Italian rapier with curved guard and bone handle, 16th century
Very nice replica of a 16th century Italian rapier with curved handle.
Due to changes in fighting techniques, swords became longer and narrower in the late Middle Ages. The traditional broadsword was replaced by the more elegant rapier. During the Renaissance, carrying a rapier was also a status symbol for free knights. Higher nobles, such as counts and barons, carried longer swords; lower nobles had to make do with shorter weapons.
The handle is made from animal bones.
