Rapier with basket and grooved handle
According to historians, the rapier first appeared as a new form of sword in the late 14th century and remained prevalent throughout much of Europe until the late 16th century. There is even evidence that it was in use in Spain as late as the 18th century. The fact that the rapier remained the undisputed civilian weapon of defense and dueling for so long can be attributed to two main advantages: first, its long, narrow, double-edged blade was ideal for delivering accurate blows from long distances. second, its elaborate vessel (which was constantly being expanded, from rings, struts, and mounts to guard blades and elaborately carved baskets or bells) provided excellent protection and could reliably absorb or deflect blows.
Although the rapier never became technically ineffective or obsolete, it unfortunately succumbed to the dictates of fashion and had to give way to smaller swords.
Fortunately, Cold Steel® decided to revive this historic classic with its own modern interpretation, designed by Dave Baker. The long, narrow blade of the Cold Steel® rapier with its grooved shell handle is razor-sharp and beautifully polished. The front third features a unique, wide groove that ensures perfect balance. The blade also reflects the finest craftsmanship and materials. The classic grooved basket handle, with its numerous struts, and the handlebar guarantee unparalleled hand protection. The handle itself is made of wood, covered with deep black ray skin, and wrapped with decorative wire. It ends with a strong, fluted pommel that perfectly balances the rapier's long blade.
