Gift Viking Sword Ulfberht
Viking sword ulfberht
Before the ulfberht swords, most swords were assembled from several pieces. Bars of soft iron were welded together with strips of steel, forged into a blade shape, and then a steel edge was welded to the sword. The ulfberht sword was a great leap forward in both technology and design. It was not made from strips, but from sheets of good carbon steel with enough carbon content to make excellent swords. The design of the sword was also a great improvement. The blade tapered more towards the tip than earlier blades. This meant that the sword sat closer to the hand and was faster in both attack and recovery than earlier swords.
The engravings on both sides of the blade are copied exactly from the original, so the reproduction is almost identical. The sword is made of high carbon steel and is beautifully balanced. The handle is made of wood and wrapped in leather. The strong crossguard is made of steel and the shape of the pommel is shaped like the Brazil nut, which was very popular at that time, both among the Vikings and in the rest of Europe.
