Combat sword, sk-b
In close collaboration with fencing and martial arts instructor Volker Kunkel and his West Coast Institute, we developed this Viking sword suitable for show combat. Unfortunately, Volker did not live to see this small series ready for the market. He died too soon, in April 2021.
The goal was to offer a robust yet light and well-balanced show sword for smaller budgets. Volker brings his many years of experience as a fencing teacher and trainer and as a market driver. The ulfberth® team implemented these specifications with their blacksmiths and created a Viking display sword with a very good quality-price ratio.
Original pieces from the 9th/10th century found in Birka, Sweden, served as a model for this sword. Century, which were classified as type H/I according to the Petersen typology for Viking swords. It has a blade made of forged spring steel, which was hardened in an oil bath and then tempered. It has a Rockwell hardness of 48-52 HRC and the very wide groove gives it flexibility and lightness. The edges of the blade are approximately 2-2.5 mm thick and the sword is delivered with a rounded and relatively wide tip for use in tournaments.
As with many surviving historical examples from this period, the triangular pommel is a two-part construction: the continuous blade tang is anchored to the lower section, and the upper section is connected to the base by two rivets.
We offer this sword in two different blade lengths (select the desired model from the drop-down menu: short = 64 cm / long = 74 cm). The short version in particular is ideal as a beginner's sword for fencers who are not yet too strong.
Optionally, matching leather sheaths with sword belts are available, item no. ulf-sw-11sa or ulf-sw-11sb .
