Discover Viking Sword (Eigg Island) With Leather Handle, Hardened Blade

Viking sword from the island of Eigg with sheath, 9th century
Hardened blade

This magnificent Viking sword is based on a silver-inlaid bronze sword hilt that was excavated on the island of Eigg (Inner Hebrides, Scotland) in 1830. Although some sword fragments were also found at that time, they could not be preserved. The beautifully detailed original grave find can be admired at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh. Dating from the 9th and early 10th centuries, this finely crafted piece of Viking history is classified as type D according to the Petersen typology of Viking swords.

Since the blade was missing from the original find, a classical Nordic shape was chosen for this reconstruction and this one-handed sword has the typical characteristics of a traditional sword from the early Middle Ages.

The straight, double-edged blade, made of EN45 tempered spring steel, has a wide groove and unsharpened edges. The handle, consisting of a short, oval guard (about 10 cm long and 2 cm thick), a brown leather-covered grip and a generous pommel, is cast in bronze. The guard and pommel are richly decorated. The highly detailed, engraved motifs and patterns that decorated the original artifact have been recreated as faithfully as possible. As with many surviving historical examples from this period, the pommel of this sword is a two-part construction. The full-length blade tang is screwed into the lower flat section and the upper cap is fixed to the base with two rivets. The beautiful decorations on the pommel are enhanced by twisted copper wire inlays.

This early medieval one-handed sword comes with a brown wooden/leather scabbard with brass muzzle, cap and belt loop (maximum belt width 6 cm).

This sword is designed as a collector's item or decorative object and is also ideal as an accessory, for example to complete your costume.
