Viking sword Erik the Red, Marto
Erik thorvaldsson (950–ca. 1003), known as erik the red, was a norwegian viking mentioned in medieval and icelandic saga sources as the founder of the first norse settlement in greenland. icelandic tradition says he was born in rogaland, norway, in the district of jæren, as the son of thorvald ásvaldsson, hence his patronymic erik thorvaldsson. the term red probably refers to his hair and beard color. erik the red's father fled norway due to a homicide. he sailed west from norway with his family and settled in hornstrandir in northwest iceland. after marrying thjodhild, erik moved to haukadal, where he set up a farm. erik then moved to the island of öxney, iceland. Popular history credits Erik with the discovery of Greenland. Erik the Red was the first permanent European settler.
