Viking dune dune sword with scabbard, 10th century
This beautiful Viking sword is a reconstruction of a find dated between 950 and 1050, which was classified as type X according to the Petersen typology of Viking swords.
A key feature of the original sword, now in the collection of the Musée de l'Armée in Paris, France, are the inscriptions engraved on the blade. One side is adorned with the famous maker's inscription ulfberht , a forge probably from the Rhineland that is considered one of the earliest sword makes (around 170 9th-century swords have been produced across Europe to date, all the way to western Russia) up to the 11th century, bearing the distinctive letters +vlfberht+ or +vlfberh+t ). On the other side is inscribed duna + duna xx , a probable abbreviation whose exact meaning is still unknown today.
The reconstruction of the Viking sword offered here has a straight, double-edged blade with unsharpened cutting edges. As with the original find, the wide groove is engraved with the inscription vlfberh+t on one side and duna + duna xx on the other. The handle consists of a short steel crossguard with rounded ends and a wooden handle section wrapped in brown leather, ending in a semicircular steel pommel.
The sword is delivered with a brown wooden/leather scabbard with a steel bezel and a wooden belt loop (for belts with a maximum width of 5 cm).
This medieval sword is designed as a collector's item or decorative object and is also ideal as an accessory, for example to complete your costume.
