Acquire Langeid Viking Sword with Sheath
Viking Langeid sword (Norwegian), 11th century, with scabbard included
This beautiful late Viking Age sword is a reconstruction of a unique find discovered in 2011 in grave number 8 during the archaeological excavation of a Viking cemetery in Langeid (Setesdal Valley, Bygland, Norway). The extraordinarily well-preserved find of iron, gold, and silver can now be admired at the Museum of Cultural History in Oslo.
Due to the combination of spirals, runes, Latin letters, and crosses that lavishly decorate the forend and pommel, the original, dated around 1030, is truly unique. Although their exact meaning remains a mystery, some of these motifs clearly convey a Christian message and suggest that this Norse weapon was deliberately given Christian symbolism. The dating of the sword (early 11th century, marking the end of Norse paganism and the beginning of the Christian Middle Ages in Scandinavia) supports this assumption.
The one-handed sword was also found along with a broad axe, which bore similarities to other axes discovered in the Thames in London from the same period. Therefore, some experts believe the sword was brought to Norway from England and may have been the prestige or display weapon of a wealthy warrior (possibly one of King Canute the Great's fighters).
Our reproduction of this extraordinary Viking one-handed sword has a double-edged blade made of EN45 spring steel with a wider and longer edge. The cutting edges are unsharpened, and the continuous tang of the blade is screwed and riveted to the pommel. The guard and pommel, made of cast (and partially tin-plated) brass, have been recreated as faithfully as possible to the highly detailed motifs and patterns that adorned the hilt of the original artifact. The wooden core handle section is tightly wrapped with brass wire.
The Langeid sword is delivered with a brown wooden/leather scabbard with a very distinctive wooden belt loop (maximum belt width 5 cm) and brass fittings.
This sword is designed as a collector's item or decorative object and is also ideal as an accessory, for example to complete your costume.
