Enjoy Haithabu Viking Sword, 9th Century, Damascus Steel.

Viking haithabu sword with scabbard, 9th century, Damascus blade

This beautifully detailed sword is a finely crafted and remarkably well-preserved reconstruction of a find from a grave in Hedeby. Dating back to the 9th century, this sword is believed to have belonged to either a Danish nobleman or a wealthy Viking warrior. The original find can be admired at the Viking Museum in Haithabu. The Viking settlement of Haithabu, the most important Viking trading centre in Jutland (near Schleswig), was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2018.

In terms of its design, this one-handed sword is a classic example of a Viking sword wielded by Norse warriors. It has the typical features of a traditional sword of the High Middle Ages: a short guard, a straight double-edged blade with a wider butt and a distinctive pommel with several ridges.

The blade of this replica is forged from Damascus steel*. The edges are unsharpened and the continuous tang of the blade is riveted to the pommel. The wooden-core handle is wrapped with red leather and adorned at both ends with decorative brass rings. The crossguard, approximately 14 cm long and 2 cm thick, and the generous five-lobed pommel are made of brass. The highly detailed, engraved motifs and patterns that adorned the handle of the original artifact were reproduced as faithfully as possible.

This one-handed sword from the High Middle Ages comes with a red wooden/leather scabbard with brass mouthpiece, cap and belt loop (maximum belt width 6 cm).

This sword is designed as a collector's item or decorative object and is also ideal as an accessory, for example to complete your costume.

A regular version of the sword with EN45 spring steel blade is also available in our shop (item no. 0116041400).

*The term Damascus steel , Damascus steel or simply Damascus refers to a composite steel made from two or more different types of steel. The name is derived from the Syrian city of Damascus, which is considered an ancient stronghold and the origin of Damascus steel production. Typically, a hard, high-carbon steel and a soft, low-carbon steel are joined together by repeated welding and forging. The high-carbon steel provides higher hardness, better hardenability, and increased edge retention, while the softer steel gives the blade greater elasticity and higher resistance to breaking. With this technology, which was developed in a time of poor and changing steel qualities, the positive properties of different steels can be combined. Due to the different colors with different carbon contents, impressive patterns of alternating layers are created, such as the so-called twist Damascus or rose Damascus . Due to these patterns, Damascus swords from the Middle Ages were said to have an inherent magic.
