Gift Vendelzeit Sword with Scabbard, Brass Handle, Tinned
Scandinavian Vendel period sword with tinned brass handle, including scabbard
This beautiful vendel sword is a reconstruction of a finely crafted and richly decorated ship burial find from a ship burial site near Uppsala, Sweden. Due to its magnificent and sophisticated decoration, it is believed to date to the 7th/8th century. The find, which dates to the 19th century, was once the ceremonial or prestige weapon of a Swedish tribal chieftain, nobleman, or elite warrior. Numerous finds from the Vendel Period (the period in Sweden's history between the Migration and the Viking Age) testify to the high quality of craftsmanship of that period.
In terms of design, this one-handed sword is a classic example of a Norse weapon. The double-edged blade with a wide groove is forged from EN45 spring steel. The cutting edges are unsharpened, and the blade's continuous tang is riveted to the pommel.
The highly detailed, engraved motifs and patterns that adorned the hilt of the original artifact have been reproduced as faithfully as possible on the approximately 9 cm long and 1.5 cm thick crossguard and the generous pommel. Both are crafted from brass and tin-plated to give a silvery appearance. The antique-finished brass accents create a beautiful contrast. As with many examples from the Vendel period, the pommel here also consists of several riveted parts. The pommel cap is inlaid with red enamel, reminiscent of genuine garnet stones. The wooden-core handle is wrapped in brown leather.
This Vendel period one-handed sword is delivered with a brown wooden/leather scabbard with a wooden strap loop (maximum belt width 5cm) and a tinned brass mouthpiece and cap.
This sword is designed as a collector's item or decorative object and is also ideal as an accessory, for example to complete your costume.
A Damascus steel version of this sword is also available in our shop (item no. 0116041101).
