The Templar Order was founded in 1118 to safeguard sacred sites and protect pilgrimage routes. The order reached its greatest splendor in the 13th century. The Knights Templar considered themselves knights of God, an honor to the Church and Christianity.

Their motto was non nobis, domine, non nobis, sed tuo nomini da gloriam: give glory, not to us, to God, not to us, but by your name. They were a highly organized military force and served as combat troops in all the Crusades. They were in the vanguard during the attack and in the rearguard during the retreat.

As the century progressed, they secured effective rule over the Latin Kingdom of Constantinople. They paid no taxes or tributes, obeyed only the Pope, and held possessions throughout Europe and the Middle East.
