Early Anglo-Saxon Sutton Hoo sword with scabbard, 7th century
The Sutton Hoo archaeological site in East Anglia, England, includes numerous burial mounds, including the famous Ship Burial Mound, from which valuable, extremely well-preserved early 7th-century artefacts were recovered in 1939. The most famous finds from this tomb, which are Widely believed to be the final resting place of King Rædwald of East Anglia, the Great Gold Buckle and the Sutton Hoo Helmet are both important Anglo-Saxon craft artefacts.
This magnificent one-handed sword is based on a sword from the same burial chamber, more precisely, on the fragments of a finely crafted hilt with a golden pommel adorned with garnets. The remains of this prestigious weapon or masterpiece can now be admired. at the British Museum in London.
The blade of this detailed reconstruction of the Sutton Hoo sword is a classic early medieval Germanic blade (broad, straight, double-edged). It is made of EN45 spring steel and has a wide groove on both sides extending almost to the tip. The parallel cutting edges are not sharpened.
Like the original find, the richly decorated booklet consists of several riveted parts. The wooden handle is covered with leather and decorated with antique brass fittings. The pommel base and guard are constructed in three parts from an intermediate layer of wood between two brass plates. The pommel's top cap is made of brass and red enamel. The elaborate patterns that adorn the museum piece were reproduced as faithfully as possible.
This one-handed sword from the High Middle Ages comes with a brown wooden/leather scabbard with a wooden belt loop (maximum belt width 5 cm) and a brass mouthplate and capella with an antique finish.
