Sword of San Fernando, Marto
Ferdinand III was both King of Castile (1217) and King of León (1230), as well as King of Galicia (1231). He was the son of Alfonso IX of León and Berenguela of Castile. Through his second marriage, he was also Count of Aumale. Ferdinand III was one of the most successful kings of Castile, not only ensuring the permanent unification of the crowns of Castile and León, but also leading the most far-reaching campaign of the Reconquista to date. Through military and diplomatic efforts, Ferdinand extended Castile's rule into southern Spain and annexed many of the great ancient cities of al-Andalus. Ferdinand was canonized by Pope Clement X in 1671, and in Spanish is known as Ferdinand the Saint, Saint Ferdinand, or Saint Ferdinand the King. Places such as San Fernando, Pampanga and the San Fernando de Dilao Church in Paco, Manila in the Philippines, and in California, the city of San Fernando and the San Fernando Valley, were named after him and placed under his patronage.
