Enjoy Black Prince Sword, Pinwheel

Black Prince's Sword, Windlass

The Black Prince was truly his father's descendant. As the son of King Edward III, one of England's great warrior kings, the Prince of Wales was probably the most romantic figure of the entire Middle Ages. At the tender age of 16, Edward of Woodstock commanded a wing of the army and distinguished himself at the Battle of Crécy, where he crushed a numerically superior French force. At the Battle of Poitiers he was in sole command and repeated his David and Goliath act. Illness claimed his life before he could assume the crown, but he left a legacy of heroism surpassed by few. He was regarded by his English contemporaries as one of the greatest knights of his time and a paragon of chivalry.

His sword hung over his grave and was said to have been stolen by Oliver Cromwell. In the mid-20th century a sword identical to the weapon engraved on his effigy emerged and was acquired by Ewart Oakeshott. Mr Oakeshott carefully examined the sword, its patina, construction and maker's mark and was satisfied that it was the Black Prince's sword.

This sword was developed at a time when sword makers were working feverishly to create a more effective sword that could also be used against the evolving plate armour. It is an extremely effective example of a piercing sword with some cutting capability. The diamond-shaped cross-section blade is stiff enough to allow for a powerful two-handed stab through plate armour.

The 1075 carbon steel blade has a straight guard with a downward curve and a leather-wrapped handle. The disc knob has a bevel that slopes down to a smaller disc with a four-headed clover imprint.

Manufactured by windlass steelcrafts.

This sword is designed as a collector's item or decorative object and is also ideal as an accessory, for example to complete your costume.
