Tinker longsword with sharp blade
Michael 'Tinker' Pearce has designed a range of Hanwei swords made from 5160 steel that combine authenticity, functionality and performance.
To meet the varying demands of Western martial artists, each of the seven swords is available in sharp and blunt versions, all of which offer excellent handling. Careful heat treatment of the 5160 steel (Tinker's favorite) through hot-dip hardening (marquenching) results in an excellent combination of strength and flexibility, with a Rockwell hardness of 50–52 HRC. This allows for increased edge strength on sharpened blades, while preventing burr formation on dull models and ensuring the tip's safety-related flexibility.
Replacement blades are available for each sword type in this series, with the exception of the early Viking sword. A key feature of Tinker's designs is that the blades are replaceable. This gives you the opportunity to purchase a complete sword plus a spare blade, allowing you to use both sharpened and dull versions. All longswords, bastard swords, and early medieval swords feature Tinker's special mounting system with hex nuts, which allows easy blade changes with an Allen key and ensures the handle remains securely attached.
With the Tinker longswords (Oakeshott type XVIII), the WMA ( Western martial arts ) adept has a pair of swift, balanced swords that can be used wonderfully in trained hands. The sharpened blade has a groove. With a diamond-shaped cross-section, it tapers towards the tip, thus ensuring the necessary bending rigidity even during cutting impacts. The flattened heel pommel (type T-1) forms a natural extension of the two-handed grip, and the sturdy, square crossguard (type 2) provides the necessary security. The handle has a hardwood core wrapped with cord, covered with leather, and fitted with steel fittings. A leather-covered scabbard is included.
