Italian longsword with scabbard, sharpened



The era of the longsword spanned nearly three centuries (from about 1350 to 1650) and no doubt because it did an excellent job! This sword had a characteristic cross-shaped hilt, a long double-edged blade and was equally suited to taking on lightly and heavily armoured opponents. Its particularly long blade provided the reach and leverage needed for powerful stabbing and slashing, while its long cross-guard and heavy pommel could be used as striking weapons and also to hook and throw the opponent off balance or control his weapon. When heavy plate armour needed to be pierced, sword strikes were almost ineffective and were often omitted in favour of the so-called half-sword technique : in this type of combat, the swordsman held the sword's handle with one hand and gripped the blade with the other in order to guide the sword's tip more accurately and pierce more precisely the gaps and joints of the knight's armour.



This Cold Steel® reconstruction was designed based on the Italian sword design. Although the blade and center of gravity are designed more for thrusting attacks, the cutting edges are also surprisingly effective. In addition, this simply designed, cross-shaped craft, with its long, downward-curving crossguard, leather-wrapped wooden handle, and balanced fishtail pommel, offers all the possibilities of sword fighting.



The Italian longsword comes with a leather covered wooden scabbard with steel fittings.

Also available is the matching companion dagger for the italian longsword (item no. cst-88itd). because the sword is well balanced and light enough to be used one-handed, cold steel® uses a dagger as a secondary weapon instead of a shield, scabbard or buckler: smaller in size but nearly identical in appearance, its heavily tapered, double-edged blade is designed more for attacks with the point than with the striking edges and is also strong enough to defend against any sword blows.
