Gift of an English Longsword, 15th Century.
English longsword, 15th century
This is a reproduction of an early 15th-century knight's sword, believed to have been found in the River Thames before reaching the Tower of London collection. The original one-and-a-half-handed sword dates from around 1400–1430 and is part of the Royal Armoury collection (item number IX.16). It is the type of sword carried by English knights at the Battle of Agincourt.
The stiff, tapered blade ends in a sturdy yet thin point. This type of sword was wielded with one or two hands. In battle, the sword could also be wielded in a half-sword hilt to better drive the point into the gaps of an armored opponent, or the crossguard and pommel could be used for grappling and striking.
The blade of this sword has three transitions: from a blunt, hollow-backed ricasso at the guard, through a hexagonal cross-section, to a flattened point with a diamond-shaped cross-section. A relatively maneuverable sword, but heavier than one might expect.
The blade of this replica was handcrafted by a skilled blacksmith. It is made of 1080 carbon steel, hardened, and tapered distally for optimal weight distribution.
The scabbard with a wooden core is covered in leather. The tip is reinforced with a brass plate decorated with a recess typical of the period. At the muzzle, leather covers part of the crossguard at the ricasso.
A certificate of authenticity and a cleaning cloth are included.
