Gift of an English Longsword, 15th Century.

English longsword, 15th century

This is a reproduction of an early 15th century knight’s sword, believed to have been found in the River Thames before reaching the collection at the Tower of London. The original one-and-a-half-hand sword dates from around 1400–1430 and is in the collection of the Royal Armouries (object number ix.16). It is the type of sword carried by English knights at the Battle of Agincourt.

The rigid, tapering blade ends in a sturdy but thin butt. This type of sword was wielded with one or two hands. In battle, the sword could also be held in a half-sword hilt to better drive the point into the hollows of an armored opponent, or use the crossguard and pommel for grappling and striking.

The blade of this sword has three transitions: from a blunt, hollow-bottomed ricasso at the guard, through a hexagonal cross-section, to a flattened tip with a diamond-shaped cross-section. A relatively maneuverable sword, but with more weight than one might expect.

The blade of this replica was handcrafted by a skilled blacksmith. It is made of 1080 carbon steel, hardened and tapered distally for optimal weight distribution.

The wooden core scabbard is covered with leather. The tip is reinforced with a brass plate, which is decorated with a typical recess of the period. At the muzzle, the leather covers part of the crossguard at the level of the ricasso.

A certificate of authenticity and cleaning cloth are included.
