Longsword of Charles V, Marto
Charles V (1500–1558), also known as Charles I of Spain (Spanish: Carlos I), was Duke of Burgundy and Holy Roman Emperor. He was ruler of both the Spanish Empire from 1516 and the Holy Roman Empire from 1519, and of the Low Countries from 1506 until he voluntarily resigned these and other offices through a series of abdications between 1554 and 1556. Through inheritance, he united under his rule large territories in western, central, and southern Europe, as well as the Spanish colonies in the Americas and Asia. As a result, his dominions covered almost four million square kilometers and were first described as the empire on which the sun never sets. He was known in his time as the emperor, like no other king, who could unite so vast an empire under his rule. He inherited Spain, America, Naples, and Sicily from his grandparents, the Catholic Monarchs; Flanders and Austria from Maximilian of Austria. In 1519, he was crowned Holy Roman Emperor and ruled the largest empire since the time of Charlemagne.
