Give yourself Landsknecht Katzbalger Sword, Windlass

landsknecht katzbalger sword, windlass

From the 14th century onwards, Swiss pikemen established themselves as the dominant mercenary force. Later, however, equally brave and powerful competitors emerged from Germany. Landsknecht troops challenged Swiss superiority in a years-long rivalry in which no prisoners were taken. The strikingly dressed German Landsknechts lived a harsh and brutal life and were renowned for their massive two-handed flamberge sword. After breaking through the enemy pike line with the flamberge, a smaller one-handed sword was used for subsequent close combat: the katzbalger.

The Katzbalger was not as elegant as its somewhat frivolous-looking older brother, but was still very stylish and designed as an effective sword for cutting and stabbing. This sword, carried by all Landsknecht troops, including pikemen and archers, had an ornate S-shaped guard and a particularly long, fluted pommel. The Renaissance roots of the Katzbalger were clearly discernible. The beautifully crafted handle would be an honour for any Landsknecht. The serrations on the pommel flow smoothly into the wooden handle, and the crossguard is skillfully spirally twisted and ends in hemispheres. The blade made of hardened carbon steel has three grooves that lighten the blade slightly. The black leather scabbard is subtly decorated with criss-crossing leather straps that knot near the muzzle, and has a unique steel tip. The crossguard measures approx. 11 cm wide. The blade has a distal taper, which means that the weight of the sword is approximately 1.13 kg.
