Give an Irish Sword with a Ring Pommel, Including a Scabbard
Irish ring-pommeled sword, including scabbard. 16th century
This one-handed sword is based on several finds and original drawings of kerns ( ceithern ) from the 16th century. The kern were light infantry soldiers who formed the bulk of the Irish armed forces in the late Middle Ages and Renaissance. These Gaelic warriors, mostly mercenaries, demonstrated their fierce fighting spirit in many conflicts across the British Isles.
One of their favourite weapons was a broadsword with a broad blade and a distinctive ring-shaped pommel, through the centre of which the end of the blade's tang visibly passed. This unique open ring pommel was relatively typical of Irish swords of the 15th and 16th centuries. Many original surviving examples of this species have been found during archaeological excavations throughout Ireland and can be admired in several museums, including the National Museum of Ireland in Dublin.
Our affordable reconstruction of the iconic Irish Gaelic ring-pommel sword features a broad, double-edged EN45 spring steel blade that is filled in for approximately two-thirds of its length. The cutting edges are unsharpened and the continuous tang of the blade is screwed into the pommel. The handle consists of an approximately 19cm long S-shaped guard, a wooden grip tightly wrapped in black leather and a strong ring pommel.
This beautiful piece of Irish history comes with a black leather and wood case with a straight end and a steel mouthpiece and cap.
This one-handed sword from the late Middle Ages/Renaissance is designed as a collector's item or decorative object. It is also ideal as an accessory, for example to complete your costume, and will make your transformation into a proud Irish fighter simply perfect.
