English or French two-handed sword, 15th century
This is a replica of a mid-15th-century two-handed sword. The original was excavated in France (presumably found in a fort near the Castillon-la-Bataille battlefield, dating from 1453). The two-handed sword is part of a group of more than eighty swords discovered at the same site and has been part of the Royal Armoury collection since 1978, object number IX.1787.
This type of sword is believed to have been used during the final years of the Hundred Years' War. Swords like this one were used during the Wars of the Roses and the early Tudor period. They are characterized by a fishtail pommel, a straight guard with rounded and flared ends, and a double-edged blade with a flattened, diamond-shaped cross-section.
The blade of this replica was handcrafted by a skilled blacksmith. It is made of 1080 carbon steel, hardened, and tapered distally for optimal weight distribution.
The scabbard with a wooden core is covered in leather. The tip is reinforced with a brass plate decorated with a recess typical of the period. At the muzzle, leather covers part of the crossguard at the ricasso.
A certificate of authenticity and a cleaning cloth are included.
