Excalibur is the legendary sword of King Arthur, sometimes attributed with magical powers or associated with the rightful sovereignty of Great Britain. The sword was early associated with Arthurian legend. In Welsh, the sword is called caledfwlch , in Cornish calesvol , in Breton kaledvoulch , and in Latin caliburnus .

The history and legend of King Arthur is closely linked to this magical and mysterious sword. As the wizard Merlin had proclaimed, only he who could draw the sword from the stone would be king. Arthur knelt before the stone, performed this act, took the sword, carried it into the cathedral, and sacrificed it on the altar. He was anointed with holy oil and solemnly swore, in the presence of all the barons and common people, to be a just king and to uphold truth and justice all the days of his life.
